Tastes Like Love : Finding Connection Through Food

Every family has a different dynamic and at some point we may have wondered what life would have been like we grew up in an alternate reality.

In the Chinese family I grew up in, emotions are not commonly acknowledged. It was about tough love and "sucking it up", where tears weren't welcome and uncomfortable conversations were avoided. At a point in my life I doubted the love from my parents and was envious of how Western mothers and fathers would be encouraging, supportive, open, and expressive.

During my younger years I remember my dad always asking me if I was hungry. Not how my day was or what I learned in school but whether I would like something to eat. I didn't see the significance of that question until recently when he was diagnosed with acute kidney failure because I know that soon, I won't hear that question from him again.

I wanted to create a series that is dedicated to finding that connection with ones heritage and relationships. Through the lens of an observer, I wanted to have participants reminisce and find a dish that is special to them while sharing vulnerable stories and learning from each other's experiences.

It isn't about what you make well but what reminded you of family or growth.

Participants and I would get together for an afternoon and cook while sharing laughter and tears. We would then commemorate the achievement by photographing the food and breaking bread.

Every month I will be spotlighting someone new, sharing their story, and presenting what tastes like love.
